BAGIRA, visual artist of Curaçao.
BAGIRA is a 29-year old Algerian – Hungarian self-taught artist who moved to Curaçao when she was 18 years old, after growing up in several countries like Hungary, Algeria, Belgium and The Netherlands.
She discovered her talent at 21 years old and she quit her job two weeks later to pursue art full-time.
Since then BAGIRA grew rapidly in her career becoming one of Curacao’s currently most known aritsts, and was voted Best Artist of Curaçao 2024, covering the island with murals from the airport, MCB bank, Curacao’s Ministry of Justice, most famous beaches, hotels and streets.
She opened her very own art gallery in Kura Hulanda Village, called ‘The Gallery’ in the heart of Otrobanda, Curacao in March 2024.
‘I paint souls, not subjects, faces that carry strength, pride, resilience, and peace.
My portraits aren’t replicas of real people, they are reflections anyone can recognize , in themselves, someone they love, someone they admire, or someone they aspire to become.
What drives me is connection , that silent moment when a viewer feels seen, understood, without a single word spoken.
My work is shaped by the countries I’ve lived in, the lives I’ve witnessed, the cultures that have become part of me, and by Curaçao, a blend of cultures and stories that I now proudly call home.
It’s here that the artist in me was born, nourished by the island’s spirit of resilience, beauty, and unity and the support of its people.
Through my art, I aim to inspire and empower people, to honor humanity, bridge cultures and remind us of the beauty and power that live inside us all.’
